Timor-Leste

The March 2022 presidential election was the first election held in the country during the pandemic. To quickly address urgent challenges ahead of the election and support safe voting during COVID-19, IFES partnered with a diverse civil society coalition to implement an innovative and inclusive voter education campaign, focusing on youth and persons with disabilities. Since 2001, IFES has been a key partner in strengthening the development of Timor-Leste’s electoral sector.

IFES supported the National Elections Commission (CNE) and Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration (STAE) as they organized some of Timor-Leste’s earliest elections, including providing STAE with voter registration and information technology support for the 2004-05 local elections. In later election cycles, IFES supported the development of electoral dispute resolution mechanisms, electoral legal frameworks, and building civil society capacity to advance inclusion in Timor-Leste’s political processes.
