Elections in Burundi: 2015 General Elections

Language

The Republic of Burundi currently has presidential elections scheduled for July 21, 2015 and senatorial elections scheduled for July 24, 2015. On June 29, 2015, Burundians voted in communal elections for 18 constituencies, in addition to voting in legislative elections for the National Assembly.

Originally scheduled for June 26, the presidential elections were moved to July 21 following unrest and violence after incumbent President Pierre Nkurunziza announced he would run for a third term. Opponents of President Nkurunziza argued that running for a third term would be unconstitutional, while his allies noted that his first term began after being elected by Parliament, not by popular vote, and should not be counted toward his term limit.
