Photo Gallery: Gambians Vote in Watershed Democratic Legislative Elections
On April 6, 2017, the Gambia held its first democratic National Assembly legislative elections after the December 2016 presidential election ousted autocratic ruler Yahya Jammeh from office and brought President Adama Barrow to power. The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) deployed a rapid assessment mission to perform a technical review of vulnerabilities in the electoral process and make recommendations for necessary integrity safeguards. The team witnessed a peaceful, democratic, and eclectic election where electors voted by casting a marble into a metal drum representing the candidate of their choice. This photo gallery is in honor of the Gambians who had the courage to revolt against an authoritarian regime through casting of their unique ballot.
