Video: The Importance of Political Finance Reform in Ukraine
On October 8, 2015, the Parliament of Ukraine adopted a new law “On Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of Ukraine Related to the Prevention of and Counteraction to Political Corruption” (Political Finance Law), which introduces sweeping changes to the regulation of political finance in Ukraine.
The law was drafted by the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) Ukraine, Members of Parliament (MPs), and IFES' civil society partners. In contrast to election laws, the Political Finance Law was drafted in an open and inclusive manner. Voices of different stakeholder groups, including MPs from various factions, civil society and the international community, were properly heard and addressed in the new law.
In an effort to increase public awareness on and understanding of changes to the regulation of political finance in Ukraine, IFES released a public service announcement (PSA) explaining these changes and their implications for the country.
In this public service announcement, IFES Ukraine Senior Legal Adviser Denys Kovryzhenko explains the objectives of political finance reform; good practices and international standards in regulating the role of money in politics; and steps needed to ensure the effective implementation of reform in Ukraine.
