IFES Statement on the Passing of Libya Political Inclusion Activist Ahmed Alhrari Dakam

Published

On November 1, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) lost a member of its extended family. Ahmed Alhrari Dakam, a passionate political inclusion activist and a major advocate for the rights of persons with disabilities in Libya, passed away due to injuries sustained in a traffic accident.

Ahmed was an active member of Zaykom Zayna, a leading disabled persons organization that works closely with IFES in supporting increased political participation of persons with disabilities. Ahmed’s enthusiasm, energy and unwavering belief in the importance of political access for all was deeply appreciated by all who worked with him and his passing is an incredible loss for everyone in this field. He was especially active in IFES led trainings and IFES Country Director Samia Mahgoub noted, "Ahmed’s belief in the rights of persons with disabilities will remain in the minds of all those who knew him. It is the positive energy Ahmed Alhrari left behind that will help us continue to advocate for equal access in political participation in Libya and around the world.”

Ahmed was a valued friend and colleague. We at IFES extend our deepest condolences to the entire disabled persons community and Ahmed’s family and will honor his memory by continuing the work that Ahmed started.
