New Version of Moroccan Sign Language Mobile App Released

Published

On September 22, 2017, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) Morocco released an updated version of its electoral lexicon mobile phone app. The app, named صوتي حقي , or “My Vote, My Right,” is an accessible civic education tool created for Moroccan citizens, particularly for those in the Deaf community. The app features live-person videos of all terms of the Moroccan sign language electoral lexicon in French, Arabic, and Moroccan sign language, as well as definitions of the terms in all three languages. The previous version of the application only featured the lexicon terms; the updated version includes definitions to flesh out the meaning of each term, all of which have been tailored to the Moroccan legal context.

The digitization of the electoral sign language lexicon will increase its exposure among Moroccan citizens, as well as allow users to spread the app’s content virally through social media platforms. Through additional upgrades to the app, users are now able to view and share content on Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp, and comment on the content using their Facebook accounts. The application is available to download on iOS and Android devices.
