Statement on the Assassination of Fernando Villavicencio

Washington, DC – The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) strongly condemns the assassination of the presidential candidate in Ecuador, Fernando Villavicencio. 

IFES expresses its solidarity first with the family of Mr. Villavicencio, his sympathisers, the citizens of Ecuador and with our partner, the National Electoral Council (CNE), at this regrettable and difficult time. 

This irrational act of violence also constitutes an attack against the institutions, the people, and Ecuador’s resilient democracy. Ecuador has a strong tradition of conducting elections with integrity and peaceful transfer of power.

IFES reiterates its full commitment to continue supporting a free democratic electoral process in Ecuador.
