Susan Kupperstein, Deputy Regional Director, Africa
Susan Kupperstein is the Deputy Regional Director for Africa at the International Foundation for Electoral Systems.
With more than 17 years of experience in development, Kupperstein has expertise as a senior manager in such technical areas as political transitions, peace-building, conflict reconstruction and recovery, democracy and governance, and security sector reform. She specializes in rule of law, monitoring and evaluation, political party strengthening, civil society development and legislative governance. Previously, Kupperstein was a Director of the Crisis, Conflict and Governance Practice at International Business and Technology Consultants, Inc. In this capacity, she provided technical assistance in the design and implementation of program evaluations; led and supported the review of technical deliverables; and provided monitoring and evaluation capacity-building services.
Previously, she was Senior Program Manager for the Middle East and North Africa Division at the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative, where she managed rule of law programs in Algeria, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Tunisia and tasks such as programmatic technical support and assistance, donor relations and financial oversight. Kupperstein also served as the Senior Program Officer at the National Democratic Institute for their Iraq program from 2003 to 2006. She speaks fluent French and has a master’s of social sciences from the University of California, Irvine where she was a Fellow at the Center for the Study of Democracy.
