Egypt's 2014 Presidential Election Law

The International Foundation for Electoral Systems’ (IFES) briefing paper Egypt’s 2014 Presidential Election Law provides expert insight into the legal framework that governs Egypt's upcoming presidential poll on May 26-27.

In this briefing paper, IFES examines the most significant amendments to the law since its previous iterations, provides in-depth analysis of the legal framework, and sheds light on the powers of the Presidential Elections Commission (PEC).

IFES also analyzes the legal reasoning of controversial provisions, which were a source of heated internal debate, such as the immunity of the PEC’s decisions from appeal before the courts. The paper concludes with recommendations for further reform.
