Elections in Armenia: May 6 National Assembly Elections

On May 6, voters in Armenia will elect 131 representatives to the country's National Assembly. As the ruling coalition led by President Serzh Sarkisian's Republican Party vies to maintain control, significant challenges are expected from opposition groups. Among them is former President Levon Ter-Petrosian's Armenian National Congress bloc, which hopes to gain seats in the national legislature for the first time.

This will be the first nationwide vote in Armenia since the 2008 presidential election, in which allegations of fraud and deadly confrontations between protesters and security forces led the government to declare a 10-day state of emergency. With a large presence of international observers and the memory of the 2008 poll still fresh in the minds of many citizens, Sunday's elections are likely to be the most scrutinized in Armenia's history.
