Memorandum of Understanding Strengthens Electoral Security Collaboration in Georgia
Georgia’s Central Election Commission (CEC) and Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) signed their third consecutive Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on electoral security on September 12, 2018. The MoU outlines how the CEC and MIA will cooperate to ensure security for the October 28, 2018, presidential election and reflects an institutionalized cooperation that had not existed prior to encouragement from IFES in 2016.

Preventing and Mitigating Electoral Violence in Guatemala
The ability for people to participate in elections free from the fear of harm is essential to inclusive, credible elections and protected by the right to human security and universal suffrage. In Central America, and more particularly in Guatemala, this freedom of fear has not been a reality for many citizens. To help address this problem, IFES has been providing technical support to the Guatemalan Supreme Electoral Tribunal on electoral violence prevention and response coordination since 2011.

IFES Delegation Meets with Prime Minister of Georgia
An IFES delegation, led by President and CEO Bill Sweeney, met with Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhktadze on September 18, in Washington, D.C. Bakhtadze credited IFES for providing key technical assistance and developmental support to the election process, and underscored the important role this has played in the Central Election Commission’s preparations for the October 28 presidential election.

The Disability Advocacy Research in Europe project will recruit 15 early-stage researchers to explore and develop recommendations for disability law and policy reform according to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Nepali Women with Disabilities Build Advocacy Skills to Engage Government Officials
IFES and the Nepal Disabled Women Association trained women with disabilities as part of a “Power to Persuade: Empowering Women with Disabilities to Influence Public Policy” training from August 27-30, 2018, in Nepal. The training included developing a unified policy platform and practicing advocacy skills for communicating with government stakeholders.

Elections on Trial Project: Inaugural Meeting of the Europe and Eurasia Electoral Jurisprudence Working Group
IFES is working to establish peer networks in Europe and Eurasia and Africa, supported by the United States Agency for International Development. Regional knowledge exchange allows judges and election commissioners to discuss best practices and share comparative examples of how other countries deal with specific categories of complaints and disputes.

Electoral Leadership Training for Asia-Pacific Election Officials
On August 29-30, 2018, IFES implemented a new tool for training senior electoral leaders in Colombo, Sri Lanka, following the fourth annual Asian Electoral Stakeholders Forum. The curriculum was designed to assist leaders to develop skills and strategies to resolve protracted challenges that prevent meaningful reforms, undermine election management body independence, and subvert the electoral process.
