Democracy Camp Alumnus’ Journey of Self-Discovery and Empowerment
Ilyas Alymbek Uulu, who is 16 and uses a wheelchair, is one of an estimated 30,000 youth with disabilities in Kyrgyzstan. He performed the leading role in an IFES-supported public service announcement and later participated in one of IFES’ annual democracy camps, experiences which profoundly changed his life.

The annual International Day of Persons with Disabilities, held on December 3, commemorates the human rights of persons with disabilities. The theme for this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities is “Empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality.” In 2018, IFES partnered with disabled people’s organizations in every region of the world to develop new tools and approaches to empower people with disabilities to participate in political life.

IFES Signs Letter in Support of Report on Violence Against Women in Politics
IFES, The Carter Center and 77 civil society organization partners signed a letter in support of the United Nations General Assembly's acknowledgement of the report, which sends a vital message that violence against women in politics contributes to the underrepresentation and political disempowerment of women worldwide. We urge all Member States to make concrete and accountable commitments to pursuing the report's recommendations.

The Integrity of Elections in Asia: Policy Lessons Applied
In response to a recent study by Max Grömping entitled The Integrity of Elections in Asia: Policy Lessons from Expert Evaluations, IFES produced a briefing paper with some examples of policy lessons applied in practice across Asia. IFES has worked in Asia for the past three decades supporting election management bodies, civil society and other electoral stakeholders in their efforts to promote electoral integrity.

Upcoming Report on Legal Mechanisms to Increase Youth Participation and Representation
IFES has co-authored an upcoming report, Understanding the Effectiveness of Legal, Policy and Public Measures Designed to Advance Meaningful Youth Political Participation, which will be available for download in late 2018. The report examines the efficacy and global impact of legal mechanisms designed to increase youth participation and representation, namely the use of youth quotas as well as lowering voting and candidate eligibility ages.

On November 14, 2018, Vasu Mohan, IFES' regional director for Asia-Pacific and technical lead on elections, conflict and security, provided testimony to the House of Representatives’ Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission. He was invited to speak about “Reducing the Risk of Mass Atrocities: The Role of Inclusive Electoral Systems Design and Election Institutions in Preventing Violence and Promoting Security for All People.”

Ending Impunity for Violence Against Women in Elections in Zimbabwe
Earlier this year, IFES research in Zimbabwe found that women engaging in elections as candidates, voters and journalists were experiencing devastating sexual extortion, physical violence, harassment and intimidation from their bosses, colleagues, religious leaders and domestic partners, both in physical and online forms. In response, IFES and local Zimbabwean partners launched an initiative to end impunity for violence against women in elections.
