“She Leads” Alumnae Launch New Women’s Community Organization in Myanmar
“She Leads” is a nationwide women’s leadership program developed by IFES and its Myanmar partner Yaung Chi Thit (YCT). The program works to address the lack of women’s leadership in politics and decision-making processes at all levels of state and society. “She Leads” includes both beginner and intermediary-level trainings and has trained over 1,000 women across Myanmar.

Violence Against Women in the Workplace: A Conversation on Capitol Hill
On November 15, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Tex.) and IFES organized a briefing to discuss violence against women in the workplace on Capitol Hill. Taking a cross-cutting perspective on the topic, the event explored diverse workplaces – from wealthy and powerful workplaces in Hollywood and in Congress, to low-income factory and agricultural workers around the United States and the developing world. The event also looked at VAW in the workplace across global regions, ethnic, religious and racial lines. The next briefing will take place on January 17, 2018, discussing “Ending Harmful Practices.”

New Program Will Engage Young Dominican Leaders with Disabilities
IFES announces its new program, in partnership with local disabled people’s organization Disability Alliance for Our Rights, “Promoting the Political Leadership of Youth with Disabilities in the Dominican Republic.” The program, made possible through the support of the United States Agency for International Development Disability Fund, will empower young persons with disabilities to make a difference in their communities by taking a more active role in political life.

Guatemalan National Disability Council Proposes Electoral Law Reform to Increase Access
On October 31, the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (CONADI) presented proposed reforms to the Elections and Political Parties Law (LEPP) to the Congressional Disabilities Affairs Committee and to the Board of Magistrates of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE). IFES provided technical assistance and key thematic inputs to CONADI throughout the process of drafting recommended updates to the LEPP.

MENA Director Testifies on Capitol Hill on “Democracy and Governance in the Middle East and North Africa”
On November 7, 2017, IFES Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa Zeinab Abdelkarim provided testimony to the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa. She was invited to speak to Members of Congress about “Democracy and Governance in the Middle East and North Africa,” in particular about impediments to reforms and what Congress and the administration can do to better achieve democracy and governance goals in the region.

Training Myanmar DPOs on Disability Rights, Media, and Elections
On October 12-13, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) held a Building Resources in Democracy, Governance and Elections (BRIDGE) training on “Disability Rights, Media, and Elections” for 25 people representing five disabled people’s organizations (DPOs) in Yangon, Myanmar including IFES’ local partner the Myanmar Independent Living Initiative (MILI).

On November 2, 2017, staff held a party to celebrate the International Foundation for Electoral Systems’ (IFES) 30th anniversary and test their knowledge of current events, elections, geography, the 1980s, and IFES. Trivia teams included Crimea River and Very Obviously Trivia Experts (VOTE), with I Wanna Vote for Somebody coming out on top.
