Celebrating 26 Years of the American with Disabilities Act
On July 26, 1990, the United States passed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a landmark law increasing access to basic rights for persons with disabilities in the country. The ADA’s passage was the result of decades of advocacy by citizens with disabilities, following other successful legal reforms such as Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act, which established nondiscrimination of persons with disabilities in federally-funded programs as a right.

IFES Hosts Event on Disability Rights at United Nations Headquarters
IFES hosted a side-event during the ninth session of the Conference of States Parties to the United Nations (UN) Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities at the UN in New York. The panel, “How Regional Collaboration Can Lead to More Effective Implementation of Political Rights of Persons with Disabilities in the 2030 Development Agenda,” emphasized the importance of South-South dialogue and regional knowledge transfer to support political participation by persons with disabilities.

Libyan Electoral Sign Language Lexicon Facilitates Deaf Empowerment
For Deaf Libyans, language barriers are a profound challenge to full participation in political life. In Libyan elections – as in many elections worldwide – speeches, voting materials and other essential electoral information are not translated into sign language. This creates an alarming gap in access to information for Libyan Deaf communities, and opens a subsequent possibility for manipulation by others.

IFES Granted Observer Status before the Venice Commission
On June 9, 2016, IFES was officially extended observer status before the Venice Commission’s Council for Democratic Elections, which handles all of the Commission’s work in this field. Professor Srdjan Darmanovic, the Ambassador of Montenegro to the U.S. and a representative of the Venice Commission, visited IFES headquarters in Washington to discuss the Commission’s work and how IFES can play a vital role on a broad range of electoral issues.

IFES and UNDP to Expand Collaboration in Electoral Practices
