Liberians Vote in Delayed Special Senate Elections
Originally slated for October 14, 2014, Liberia's special senatorial elections were moved to December 20 due to the Ebola outbreak. Amid this public health crisis, Liberians headed to the polls to elect half of the country's 30-member Senate. With the State of Emergency imposed by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf expiring in November, the conduct of this election was an important marker of the progress made in the fight against Ebola. Four different teams from the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) deployed to the counties of Montserrado, Bomi, Margibi and Grand Bassa in central Liberia to witness the vote.

Former IFES Board Chairman Ambassador Charles T. Manatt Honored at DNC Dedication Celebration
On December 10, 2014, Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) hosted a dedication of the third floor of the national DNC’s offices in honor of the late Charles T. "Chuck" Manatt (1936-2011), DNC Chair from 1981-1985 and International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) Board of Directors Chair from 1993-1999. Members of the Manatt family participated in the tribute including his widow Kathleen Manatt, son Daniel Manatt, daughter Michele A. Manatt, her husband Wolfram Anders and Manatt’s grandson Patrick Anders.

The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) continues to play an important role in elections and democracy worldwide. In 2014, IFES worked to support credible and inclusive elections from Indonesia – one of the world’s largest democracies – to Tunisia – where a closely watched democratic transition is occurring – and in many other countries.

Registering Marginalized Populations to Vote in Nepal
As Nepal undergoes critical electoral and governance changes, IFES Nepal is working with local partners to register Nepalis – including Dalits, youth, Muslim women, freed Kamaiya (those subjected to forced labor) and other historically marginalized groups – to vote.
