Video Playlist: IFES' 2014 U.S. Election Program
The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) hosted 150 participants from 55 countries during the 12th U.S. Election Program from November 2-5, 2014. The program featured lively presentations and discussions about the nuances and idiosyncrasies of the U.S. electoral system. A Comprehensive Approach to Supporting Elections in Tunisia
On December 17, 2010, a Tunisian street vendor called Mohamed Bouazizi doused himself in flammable liquid and self-immolated, sparking a revolution that would not only change the political trajectory of his country, but the Arab world. After years of suffering humiliating and degrading treatment by municipal officers, unable to afford the bribes they demanded, Bouazizi acted out of desperation and catalyzed protests throughout Tunisia – and eventually much of the Arab world – centered on a host of social and political issues.

IFES Supports Efforts to Promote Women’s Engagement in Elections in Myanmar
In Myanmar, there is a significant gap between men and women’s engagement in elections, politics and governance. There is much work to be done to ensure gender equality in the electoral process. The Union Election Commission of Myanmar (UEC), with support from the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) is working on a number of initiatives to better incorporate women into the process.

2014 IFES Baxter Award Ceremony Honors Dr. Christiana Thorpe
IFES) presented the 2014 Joe C. Baxter Award to Dr. Christiana Thorpe, Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairwoman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC) of Sierra Leone. Dr. Thorpe is the first woman to serve as Chief Electoral Commissioner in Sierra Leone. During her tenure as the head of the NEC, the Commission has implemented meaningful reforms and conducted elections that have been agreed upon by all electoral stakeholders and the international community as being free, fair, transparent. Dr. Thorpe’s sister, Patricia O. Thorpe-Finney, accepted the award on her behalf.

A Look at Election Management Worldwide
Quality election management is a vital core of democracy. A legitimate electoral process and public confidence in democratic governance depends on both the actual and perceived integrity of an election. Special focus on the role and challenges of electoral management is required in order to conduct a free and fair election. The International Foundation for Electoral Systems works with election management bodies (EMBs) around the world on all aspects of election administration in all phases of the electoral cycle, from pre-election preparation to announcing results.

Money and Elections in the Maldives
IFES conducted the first systematic nationwide survey of its kind in the Maldives. The survey was conducted to measure the prevalence of vote buying in the Maldives during the March 2014 parliamentary elections. The final report, Money and Election in Maldives: Perceptions and Reality, will be shared with the Government, the Parliament, the Election Commission, civil society, political parties and others.

IFES’ 2014 U.S. Election Program
For almost three decades, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) has supported citizens’ rights to participate in free and fair elections around the globe. Since 1992, IFES has hosted a flagship event, the U.S. Election Program, which brings together election officials, parliamentarians and diplomats from around the world to observe and learn about the U.S. electoral system as well as discuss elections and voting from comparative international perspectives.
This year’s program was held from November 2-5, in Washington, D.C., and provided a range of educational and networking opportunities for executives responsible for elections and voting.
