IFES and OAS Sign Memorandum of Understanding to Strengthen Electoral Observation Systems
The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) and the Organization of American States (OAS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on September 8 to further cooperation on electoral observation systems.
IFES has been actively promoting the right of citizens in OAS member states – and around the world – to have a voice in how they are governed. When founded in 1987, Haiti was one of the first countries where IFES developed programming. Today, IFES provides technical and professional assistance across Latin America and the Caribbean in all areas of the electoral cycle.

Health Crisis in West Africa Erodes Peace and Democratization Efforts
The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) is deeply concerned about the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. This health crisis has resulted in more than 1,350 reported deaths so far in a region that has been moving steadily toward peace and democratization. This outbreak of the Ebola virus has already killed more people than any other Ebola epidemic in history.

Promoting Participation By Electing Youth: The London Youth Advisory Council
The London Youth Advisory Council (LYAC) of Ontario, Canada is comprised of young people who are elected to their positions by the general public. Each councilor represents a ward, or region, of the city of London, Ontario. For this episode of Dialogues on Democracy, IFES Youth Advisor Augusta Featherston spoke with Ward 4 Councilor Nicole Worozbyt and Adam Fearnall, Council Director of London Youth Advistory Council (LYAC) about the impact their council has had on their community and how some of these lessons can be expanded to new programs.

Nurturing Democracy in the Maldives
In June, The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) held a “Democracy Camp” for 40 youths, aged 14-16, from around the country.The primary goal of the camp is to enhance the participants’ knowledge on civic education, rights and responsibilities of a citizen, democracy, human rights and other pressing social issues. Learning by Gaming: Democrapoli
Within its civic and voter education campaigns in anticipation of the Malian communal elections, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), in collaboration with the Nigerien NGO Groupe de Recherche Action sur la Démocratie et les Systèmes Electoraux (GRADSEL), has developed an educational game called Democrapoli: Elections Communales Mali (Communal Elections Mali).

Empowering Youth in Nepal to Secure their Voting Rights
As part of the USAID-funded “Strengthening Political Parties, Electoral and Legislative Processes” program, IFES Nepal is partnering with subawardees like Youth Initiative (YI) to strengthen the participation of youth, ethnic minorities and historically marginalized groups in Nepal’s electoral process. In support of this objective, IFES Nepal and YI recently launched a new initiative – “Voter Registration, Electoral Participation and Citizenship Certificate Support for Youth” – to ensure that eligible youth are able to register and secure their right to vote.
