IFES Granted Observer Status before the Venice Commission
On June 9, 2016, IFES was officially extended observer status before the Venice Commission’s Council for Democratic Elections, which handles all of the Commission’s work in this field. Professor Srdjan Darmanovic, the Ambassador of Montenegro to the U.S. and a representative of the Venice Commission, visited IFES headquarters in Washington to discuss the Commission’s work and how IFES can play a vital role on a broad range of electoral issues.

IFES and UNDP to Expand Collaboration in Electoral Practices
The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to advance electoral practices around the world. The enhanced collaboration will promote inclusive, credible electoral processes across borders while fostering good and accountable governance institutions.

Women’s Reserved Seats in Bangladesh: A Systemic Analysis of Meaningful Representation
There are currently four separate and different reserved seat systems for women at three levels of government in Bangladesh, and they produce different gender equality outcomes. This paper, authored by IFES Bangladesh Chief of Party Silja Paasilinna, examines these systems in detail, provides an overview of gender-based challenges women elected representatives face in both general and reserved seats, and provides a summary of suggested improvements to the current systems as well as options for alternative systems.
