This document contains a collection of posters, flyers and civic education literature pertaining to the 1994 national elections in South Africa. Included are posters with the exact date of the election and pamphlets depicting the voting and registration process. The material was part of an effort made to provide voter education to the large swath of the South African population who had been denied voting rights until this time.

Democracy and Voter Education Initiative
The “Democracy and Voter Education Initiative” published in 1994 by the Institute for Contextual Theology covers topics such as forms of state, electoral systems and democracy. The impetus for the “Initiative” was to educated people in South Africa on political participation in the democratic system and the concept of the vote.

Christians and Democracy
“Christians and Democracy” is comprised of 12 Bible Studies from Angola, adopted for use in South Africa and was published in January of 1994 by Diakonia for the Natal Churches campaign, “Educate for Democracy.” Real life stories, bible excerpts, and reflection questions accompany these 12 studies and are provided in the belief that the Church and Christians have an important role in building democracy in South Africa.

Voter education: Manual for Trainers
The third edition of the South African “Voter Education: A Manual for Trainers” was published in 1994 by the Centre for Development Studies and The National Democratic Institute for International Affairs. The piece was directed at those who would be training and educating new voters on the electoral process. The manual explains voting procedure as well as election terminology and shows trainers how to run workshops geared at educating the public on those topics.

Hello Voters for the New South Africa
Hello Voters for the New South Africa is a pre-election magazine that introduces the political organizations participating in the upcoming 1994 national elections. Each political organization’s manifesto, constitution, and answers to citizens’ questions are provided. Also included are the pictures and short biographies on the five senior members of each political organization.

Hour for Democracy Songbook
“The Hour for Democracy Songbook” is a compilation of songs complete with lyrics focusing on the theme of democracy, change, and the upcoming April 1994 elections in South Africa. Published by the Institute for Contextual Theology, this songbook also includes a message from Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who urges the people of South Africa to exercise their right to vote.

Prayer for the Elections
The Natal Church Leaders in April 1994, in preparation for the South African national elections that month, published this “Prayer for the Elections” written in both English and Zulu. This prayer calls for free and fair elections, a non-violent election, and acceptance of whatever the outcome may be.
