Elections for All: Empowering the Underrepresented
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights guarantees all individuals the freedom to partake in their nation’s government and political processes, including elections. Yet, many individuals around the world face barriers to full participation due to social, ethnic and economic inequalities. IFES’ programs empower these underrepresented populations to participate in political life in a variety of ways. This photo gallery provides some examples of our work in this area.

Egypt’s First Free Presidential Election
Fifteen months after the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak, Egypt held what is considered to be the first free presidential election in the country’s history. Over the span of two days, citizens all across the country queued to cast their vote for one of the 13 candidates on the ballot. IFES Vice President for Programs Michael Svetlik was in Egypt during the first phase of the Shura Council elections, which took place January 29-30. He accompanied three members of IFES’ Board of Directors to Egypt who evaluated our progress in assisting electoral stakeholders implement credible electoral processes - critical to the current political transition.
