The first round of the election was held on 17 November 1996 and the main candidates were Mircea SNEGUR (Party of Rebirth and Conciliation of Moldova), Petru LUCINSCHI (Independent) and Vladimir VORONIN (Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova). A second round of voting was held on 1 December.
