Engaging Deaf Communities Through Electoral Sign Language Lexicons
As part of its commitment to meaningful participation of persons with disabilities in political and public life, IFES is collaborating with Gallaudet University to develop a Haitian sign language lexicon of key election-related terms for publication on ElectionAccess.org. On November 2, 2018, the two organizations co-hosted an event on best practices for making elections around the world inclusive of Deaf communities.

Empowering Kenyan Women with Disabilities as Policy Advocates
IFES’ Kenya Electoral System Support project collaborated with Women Challenged to Challenge (WCC), an umbrella disabled people’s organization, to develop a policy platform document that will support women with disabilities’ advocacy efforts. On August 10, IFES became a member of the United States International Council on Disability (USICD). USICD, a network of organizations that promotes inclusion of disability perspectives in U.S. foreign policy and aid, spans organizations and individuals in more than 30 U.S. states and a number of foreign countries.

IFES Signs Global Disability Summit Charter for Change
On July 24, the United Kingdom Department for International Development, the International Disability Alliance and the Government of Kenya will host the first-ever Global Disability Summit. IFES, represented by IFES President Bill Sweeney, will participate and has signed the Charter for Change, the summit’s principal legacy document outlining actions that must be taken to ensure the rights, freedoms, dignity and inclusion for all persons with disabilities.

Haythem Srihi: From H4D Participant to Municipal Councilor
IFES launched an original initiative called Hack4Democracy (H4D), a combination of democracy camps and hackathons which uses technology to engage Tunisian youth in civic activism. At just 24 years old, Haythem Srihi is a member of the H4D finale’s winning team and a newly elected municipal councilor from the city of Jammel. Haythem’s success in both the H4D competition and in the May 6 municipal elections serves as a prime example of what Tunisian youth can achieve when they are given the tools to prosper and have the drive to overcome societal barriers.

New Documentary Highlights Disability Rights Advocacy in Libya
On February 7, IFES launched a documentary that highlights successful disability rights advocacy in Libya and the “Rights Unite” campaign. The documentary – which was made possible through the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) – explores how the Election Access Working Group, which was established with the support of IFES and USAID in 2013, began as a fragmented group of disability rights advocates and flourished as a successful advocacy group.
