Women’s Election and Leadership Training Program
The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) has implemented the Women’s Election and Leadership Program in several countries to develop the capacity of women to participate in the election process as election officials and to develop leadership skills among women. These programs provide a blend of technical knowledge and soft skills to enable trainees to effectively use the knowledge and skills gained in electoral roles.

Kenya Electoral System Support
The new Kenyan Constitution puts forth a vision of a democracy where all voters are fully enfranchised. In particular, it emphasizes the inclusion of women, youth, persons with disabilities and other groups who have historically been marginalized by, or underrepresented, in the governance of the country.

The Union Election Commission of Myanmar (UEC), with support from the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) is working on a number of initiatives to better incorporate women into the process.

Myanmar’s Election Commission Takes Steps to Achieve Gender Equality and Include Voters with Disabilities
After five decades of military rule, Myanmar has initiated an ongoing process of democratic reform, opening new and significant political space. However, persons with disabilities in Myanmar still face numerous obstacles in accessing their right to vote, and, at only 6.8 percent, Myanmar has one of the lowest percentages of women in parliament in the region.

IFES Survey Examines Priorities for Gender Advocacy in Armenia
IFES’ Applied Research Center (ARC) conducted a global survey of practitioners in gender equality and women’s empowerment in 40 countries where IFES is active. The survey identifies key issues and challenges affecting women and girls and examines priorities for advocacy on gender issues. The survey also assesses the effectiveness of women’s organizations and their capacity-building needs to improve future gender program interventions.

Investing in Common Aspirations: Lewis Madanick on the Former Eastern Bloc, Democracy and Humanity
Lewis Madanick, Program Manager at Open World Leadership Center, has watched Eastern Europe’s rocky to transition to democracy. A child of the Cold War and a student of Russian/Soviet history, he has a deep interest in global politics and the role of the individual in democracy. While at IFES from 1999-2000, Madanick served as Program Officer for Russia. He now works to build ties between emerging leaders in Eurasia and the United States. A week after the death of Margaret Thatcher – who recognized the first Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev as reform-oriented – Madanick comments on the march of democracy in former Eastern Bloc.

Under a New System: Kenya's 2013 Elections
Ahead of the March 4, 2013 general elections, the country focused on introducing reforms and improvements to prevent and curtail election violence, including the introduction of a new constitution, a new election commission and a new voter registration system. Michael Yard, IFES Chief of Party in Kenya, tells us how Election Day went.
