Professor Attahiru Jega: Nigeria’s Champion for Democracy
Nigeria’s former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega, has been an important force for democracy in Nigeria during his tenure as the country’s top election management official. Recently honored with IFES’ 2015 Charles T. Manatt Democracy Award, Professor Jega stepped down from his post on June 30 with a legacy of increased trust in elections and the INEC.

After consultation with key national and international stakeholders, Haiti’s Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) has developed the country’s first national gender and elections strategy with support from the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES). This document is intended as a tool for the CEP to promote women’s participation in all stages of the electoral process and for all relevant stakeholders to coordinate their efforts regarding gender equality in elections in an effective manner.

Back in Haiti, Back at Home
IFES Chief of Party in Haiti Alessandra Rossi has over a decade of experience in electoral assistance projects. She recently served in Libya, where she supported the implementation of a voter education initiative targeting women, youth, voters with disabilities and rural communities in the eastern part of the country for the 2012 National Congress Elections with the United Nations Electoral Support Team in Libya. As she return to Haiti for the third time, she talks to us about the new program, and how it feels to be back in a country she says is like home.
