Youth Forums Offer Hope to Young Syrians
In 2016, IFES assisted Syrian organizations based in Gaziantep, Turkey to found Musharaka, a forum to encourage civic engagement of Syrians living in Gaziantep. Through the Musharaka Forum, IFES and its local partners have been able to establish a beacon of hope and optimism where few others have realized success and meaningful impact.

Hack4Democracy Supports Tunisian Youth Civic Engagement
Tunisian youth played a significant role in the lead up to the 2011 revolution. Despite being at the forefront, many young Tunisians now feel that the gains of the revolution were stolen from them, with the older generation benefitting while youth remain politically and economically marginalized. IFES and the Tunisian Youth Forum are working to transform Tunisian youth’s online engagement into active civic engagement through an innovative new initiative called Hack4Democracy camps.

Elections in Iran: 2017 Presidential and Municipal Elections
On May 19, Iranians will go to the polls to elect their next president and members of city and village councils. If no candidate receives a majority (50% plus one) in the presidential election, the top two candidates will compete in a runoff election.

Elections in Palestine: 2017 Local Elections
Palestine will hold elections on May 13, with voters choosing 3,849 members of municipal and village councils in the West Bank. Elections have been called for 391 councils. However, voting will only be held for 145 councils.

On May 4, Algeria will hold elections for the People’s National Assembly. Voters will elect 462 members of the lower house of the bicameral Parliament. These elections will be the first since the Parliament adopted constitutional reforms last year.

Tunisia's Election Commission Organizes Global Campaign Finance Conference
On March 28, Tunisia’s High Independent Authority for Elections (ISIE) organized an international conference on the financing of political life during electoral periods with support from the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), the United Nations Development Programme, the Council of Europe and the Venice Commission. The conference provided an opportunity to examine key issues related to campaign finance through the lens of the French, Mexican, Canadian and Tunisian campaign finance systems.
