A Milestone for Georgian Democracy: the 2013 Presidential Elections
On October 27, 2013, Georgia held presidential elections. These polls were peaceful and the results were largely accepted. This vote also resulted in the nation's second consecutive peaceful transfer of power through the ballot box, marking a historic day for all Georgians and an important step in the nation’s democratic development.

Over 1.6 million voters visited 3,741 polling stations in Georgia and 52 polling stations abroad to elect the next President for a five-year mandate. Accessible Elections for Persons with Disabilities in Five Southeast Asian Countries
All too often, persons with disabilities are not included in the political lives of their country on an equal basis with others. Accessible Elections for Persons with Disabilities in Five Southeast Asian Countries is the first systematic attempt to gather data on election access from Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, the Philippines and Vietnam. The report reviews – for persons with disabilities – existing legal frameworks, challenges and barriers in exercising political rights and participation; best practices and innovations; and examples of how disabled persons organizations have been involved in electoral issues.

Inclusion of Marginalized Communities in Georgia
For many years, non-Georgian speaking regions of the country have been disenfranchised, as election information has been historically distributed only in the Georgian language. This podcast features Anthony Bowyer, IFES Senior Program Manager for the Caucasus and Central Asia as he stresses the importance of giving a voice to these communities, and steps the election commission of Georgia is taking to increase representation.

Financing Politics: The Middle East and North Africa
Financing Politics: The Middle East and North Africa is a collaborative effort between the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) and the Arab Region Parliamentarians against Corruption (ARPAC). It represents a concerted attempt to better understand and document existing political finance regulations and experiences in five countries – Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Tunisia and Yemen. The availability of information on the funding of parties and campaigns is a first and significant step in enhancing transparency.

Snapshot of Georgia’s 2013 Parliamentary By-Elections
On April 27, 2013, Georgia held by-elections in the districts of Nadzaladevi, Baghdati and Samtredia to fill three majoritarian seats. These seats opened following political appointments made after the October 2012 parliamentary elections. Eleven candidates in Nadzaladevi, eight in Baghdati and five in Samtredia registered as participants for the by-elections. According to Georgia’s Central Election Commission (CEC), the district of Nadzaladevi in Tbilisi has 140,000 voters, making it the third largest district in Georgia. The districts of Samtredia and Baghdati in the Imereti region have 48,000 and 24,000 voters, respectively. The images below provide an inside look at Election Day.

Yet, many individuals around the world face barriers to full participation due to social, ethnic and economic inequalities. IFES Yemen Survey: Briefing Report 2012
Following Yemen's early presidential election in February 2012, IFES conducted a nationwide survey of voting-age adults in Yemen. Survey questions were designed to assess attitudes toward the 2012 presidential election and satisfaction with the current situation in Yemen by measuring availability of information leading up to the election and public perceptions of the electoral process.
