Learning About Violence Against Women in Politics in Leaps and Bounds: Surprising Findings from the Maldives
In 2011, IFES' Electoral Violence Education and Resolution (EVER) methodology found that women were rarely the subjects of political violence in the Maldives – less than 2 percent of violent incidents specifically targeted women, compared to 46 percent targeting men. Four years later, using a new, survey-based methodology, data collected by Professor Elin Bjarnegård from Sweden's Uppsala University in collaboration with IFES suggested a very different situation.

IFES Chairman Submits Written Congressional Testimony on “Electoral Assistance: A Cost-Effective Investment in a More Stable, Prosperous World”
Chairman of the IFES Board Ken Blackwell submitted a written testimony to the House Committee on Appropriations’ Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs for inclusion in the record on “Electoral Assistance: A Cost-Effective Investment in a More Stable, Prosperous World.” Blackwell urged the subcommittee and the U.S. Congress to continue its tradition of bipartisan support for democracy, rights and governance.

The Cycle of Corruption: Elections and the Abuse of State Resources
In many ways, elections are a central component in cycles of systemic corruption. IFES conducted a two-year research project to develop an assessment methodology to evaluate the effectiveness of a given country’s framework for addressing the abuse of state resources in election campaigns. The final product of this project is a detailed methodology that specifically examines three categories of state resources: state personnel; state funds and physical resources; and official government communications to the public.

Election Administration and Management BRIDGE Training Builds Internal Capacity
In order to achieve effective and professional election management, election administrators’ capacity must be continually prioritized and developed. From August 30-31, 2017, IFES Building Resources in Democracy, Governance and Elections (BRIDGE) facilitators implemented an “Election Administration and Management” workshop for 20 attendees. The first day of the workshop focused primarily on the functions, structures, roles, and responsibilities of election management bodies, while the second day drilled down into a more detailed discussion of related election administration and management topics.

Women’s Political Empowerment: A Conversation on Capitol Hill
On January 17, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Tex.) and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) organized a briefing to discuss how women’s political participation – both domestically and internationally – has developed in recent years; how political parties respond and adapt; the role that intersectionality and male allies play in changing gender norms in politics; and remaining barriers to equitable participation. The next briefing will take place on March 21, 2018, discussing “Ending Harmful Practices.”

Vice President of Programs Testifies on Capitol Hill on Upcoming Elections in Latin America
On January 10, 2018, IFES Vice President of Programs Michael Svetlik provided testimony to the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere. He was invited to speak to Members of Congress about “Upcoming Elections in the Western Hemisphere: Implications for U.S. Policy,” in particular about the strengths of electoral institutions in the region and assistance provided by the U.S. government.

Shaping the Next Generation of D.C. Leaders and Voters
As a global leader in democracy promotion, IFES recognizes the importance of cultivating the next generation of leaders and voters. In the spirit of cultivating this leadership more locally, IFES staff returned to Turner Elementary School, a public school located in the Congress Heights neighborhood of Washington, D.C., on November 17 and December 8, 2017, to meet with fifth-grade students. They were part of a series of seminars on elections, in advance of the school’s first student-run election for class offices, which took place on Thursday, December 14.

IFES Congratulates Tarana Burke on Being Named a TIME Magazine “Person of the Year”
The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) congratulates Tarana Burke, creator of the #MeToo movement, on being named one of TIME magazine’s “Silence Breakers,” and included as a 2017 Person of the Year. “The Silence Breakers” represent the thousands of people across the world who have come forward with their experiences of sexual harassment and assault. Burke, who founded the #MeToo movement in 2006 to help survivors of sexual violence, was recently featured in an IFES Capitol Hill panel on “Violence Against Women in the Workplace.”

Violence Against Women in the Workplace: A Conversation on Capitol Hill
On November 15, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Tex.) and IFES organized a briefing to discuss violence against women in the workplace on Capitol Hill. Taking a cross-cutting perspective on the topic, the event explored diverse workplaces – from wealthy and powerful workplaces in Hollywood and in Congress, to low-income factory and agricultural workers around the United States and the developing world. The event also looked at VAW in the workplace across global regions, ethnic, religious and racial lines. The next briefing will take place on January 17, 2018, discussing “Ending Harmful Practices.”
