Snapshot of Georgia’s 2013 Parliamentary By-Elections
On April 27, 2013, Georgia held by-elections in the districts of Nadzaladevi, Baghdati and Samtredia to fill three majoritarian seats. These seats opened following political appointments made after the October 2012 parliamentary elections. Eleven candidates in Nadzaladevi, eight in Baghdati and five in Samtredia registered as participants for the by-elections. According to Georgia’s Central Election Commission (CEC), the district of Nadzaladevi in Tbilisi has 140,000 voters, making it the third largest district in Georgia. The districts of Samtredia and Baghdati in the Imereti region have 48,000 and 24,000 voters, respectively. The images below provide an inside look at Election Day.

Public Opinion of Democracy Issues in Kosovo: Findings from an IFES August 2012 Survey
From August 17-29, 2012, IFES partner Index Kosova conducted fieldwork and data processing to determine public opinion in Kosovo. The survey covered a sample size of 1,520 Kosovars and aimed to understand the adult population’s knowledge of key components of the election process; measure awareness on current electoral reform processes; analyze attitudes toward political participation; and measure citizen’s perceptions of the Central Election Commission.

In Georgia, a Conference for Greater Inclusion
Georgians with disabilities face significant social, physical and legislative barriers to equal participation in their country’s electoral and political processes.

Kosovo Civic Education Campaign
In the fall of 2012, IFES collaborated with six local partners in Kosovo to launch “Participate,” a civic education campaign aimed at increasing public awareness on democratic values. This includes independent voting; the role of women, youth and minority groups in election processes; roles and responsibilities of election management bodies; and electoral complaints. The campaign reached 33,883 voters through face-to-face activities; distributed 87,482 informational brochures, pamphlets and other printed material; and reached over 600,000 Kosovars through TV and radio programs, as well as newspaper articles. Jordan’s First Election Under a New Commission
On January 23, 2013, Jordanians went to the polls to vote in the first election since the country enacted reforms following widespread protests during the Arab Spring. In this first election administered by the IEC, Jordanians cast two ballots—one for the national district and one for a local district. First Line of Action: Preparing Poll Workers for Jordan’s Upcoming Elections
In preparation of the January 23, 2013 parliamentary elections, IFES held a training of trainers workshop in Karak, Jordan. Part of a nationwide cascade training plan, the goal was to enable individuals to officially train poll workers in their home districts. The trainings provided insight into Election Day procedures and polling station regulations. The participants also received an overview of the new laws, regulations and executive instructions that will be in effect during the upcoming elections.
