A letter from the leaders of the Natal Churches in South Africa, “Christians, Democracy, and the Elections” provided voter education as well as voter motivation in preparation for South Africa’s first ever national elections in 1994. Published by the Natal Church Group on June 10th 1993, this letter stressed how Christians in South Africa had the duty to defend democracy.

Participants' Manual for the voter trainers' programme
Published by the Independent Mediation Service of South Africa in 1993, “Participants’ Manual for the Voter Trainers’ Program” provides exercises to ensure fair and responsible behavior in voter trainers’ classes. This document provides a series of illustrations of different conflicts between the trainer and the trainees and asks the applicant to provide resolutions to these potential scenarios in order to test each applicant.

Project X: A Different History Lesson
Project X – A Different History Lesson is a book written by Belinda Mendelowitz and first published in 1993 by Macmillan Boleswa Publishers is dedicated to the youth of South Africa and highlights the importance of youth voter education. This fictional story of a 4th grade class who become educated on ideas of tolerance, freedom of speech, and voting after the announcement of the first democratic election in South Africa serves as an example of South African attempts to educate the youth on the importance of democratic and free elections.

“Voter Education,” published in 1993, describes democracy, free and fair elections, and the process of voting in the context of the upcoming 1994 South African elections. The 1994 elections were the first in which universal adult suffrage was permitted. Participants included mayors, prefects, judges from local electoral tribunals, political parties and non-governmental organizations.
