This report analyzes voter participation among Salvadorans and discusses the reasons why they do and do not participate in elections. The report also looks at Salvadorans’ understanding of democracy, equality for both men and women in the political arena and finishes by discussing the future opportunities for participation in Salvadoran elections.

The booklet contains five chapters which focus on the following topics: politics and citizen participation, the elections, and the political parties in El Salvador. The aim of the booklet is to increase citizens’ participation in the March 1997 Legislative and Municipal Elections and to encourage them to get informed on the agenda of the political parties to run in the elections.
