Elections in Burkina Faso: 2016 Municipal Elections
On May 22, Burkinabe voters will elect Municipal Councilors, who will in turn elect their Mayors and Deputy Mayors. In total, 19,624 seats will be contested in 9,299 electoral districts.

IFES Testifies on Capitol Hill on “Democracy Support Strategies in Africa”
On May 18, IFES Regional Director for Africa Rushdi Nackerdien testified before the House Committee on Foreign Affairs’ Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights, and International Organizations on “Democracy Support Strategies in Africa.” Nackerdien recommended that the U.S. Congress maintain and even increase American engagement with democracy and governance programming in Africa, with a particular focus on election assistance across the entire electoral cycle.

Male Allies for Leadership Equality: Learning from Nigeria’s Experience
IFES seeks to address how men and women can work together in leadership, particularly when a country is in the midst of conflict or undergoing a political transition, by developing a Male Allies for Leadership Equality training curriculum. Following a first round of focus group discussions with Syrians living in Gaziantep, Turkey, IFES met with a wide variety of Nigerian stakeholders in an effort to understand if and how male and female leaders were working together given the progress Nigeria’s institutions have made on gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Elections in Uganda: 2016 General Elections
On February 18, Ugandans will vote for President, 290 Members of Parliament who are directly elected to represent 290 constituencies, as well as 112 District Women Members of Parliament. A presidential candidate must receive 50 percent plus one vote to avoid a run-off election. Members of Parliament are elected in single-member constituencies through a simple majority system.
