A Comprehensive Approach to Supporting Elections in Tunisia
On December 17, 2010, a Tunisian street vendor called Mohamed Bouazizi doused himself in flammable liquid and self-immolated, sparking a revolution that would not only change the political trajectory of his country, but the Arab world. After years of suffering humiliating and degrading treatment by municipal officers, unable to afford the bribes they demanded, Bouazizi acted out of desperation and catalyzed protests throughout Tunisia – and eventually much of the Arab world – centered on a host of social and political issues.

Regulating Campaign Finance in Tunisia’s Historic Elections
Over the past two years, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) has built a strong relationship with the Tunisian Court of Accounts (CoA), the body responsible for regulating the financing of electoral campaigns. IFES has supported the CoA as it trained judges on campaign finance and developed an internal manual of procedures for regulating campaign finance for the upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections. In order to train the 120 judges responsible for regulating campaign finance, IFES, in partnership with the CoA, held a training based on the manual of procedures and international best practices. The seminar also aimed to collect judges’ feedback on the content of the manual before its finalization.

Nigeria: All eyes on 2015
With the approach of national elections in February 2015, there is increased interest in the Nigerian Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) preparations for the polls. The Adamawa gubernatorial election, which had been scheduled for October 11, was cancelled just days before it was scheduled to be held, following a decision by the country’s Federal High Court. Unfortunately, this development has removed an opportunity to test Nigeria’s preparations for the security challenges that will be faced during the general election in 2015, as Adamawa is one of three northern states that are currently under emergency rule and have borne the brunt of attacks by the terrorist group Boko Haram.
