Male Allies for Leadership Equality: Learning from Nigeria’s Experience
IFES seeks to address how men and women can work together in leadership, particularly when a country is in the midst of conflict or undergoing a political transition, by developing a Male Allies for Leadership Equality training curriculum. Following a first round of focus group discussions with Syrians living in Gaziantep, Turkey, IFES met with a wide variety of Nigerian stakeholders in an effort to understand if and how male and female leaders were working together given the progress Nigeria’s institutions have made on gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Partnerships for Meaningful Elections in Africa
With the recent conclusion of 2015, it is meaningful to reflect on the successes and lessons from last year. In a U.S. Institute for Peace address in 2015 during his visit state visit to the U.S., Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari reflected on the democratic success in his country in 2015: “the contributions of IRI [International Republican Institute], NDI [National Democratic Institute] and IFES [International Foundation for Electoral Systems] to the success of the 2015 general elections in Nigeria are well documented.

Elections in Uganda: 2016 General Elections
On February 18, Ugandans will vote for President, 290 Members of Parliament who are directly elected to represent 290 constituencies, as well as 112 District Women Members of Parliament. A presidential candidate must receive 50 percent plus one vote to avoid a run-off election. Members of Parliament are elected in single-member constituencies through a simple majority system.

On January 24, Haiti will hold run-off presidential and partial second-round legislative elections. These elections were originally scheduled for December 27, 2015, but were postponed by the Provisional Electoral Council.
