The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) will honor former Chairman Attahiru Jega of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Congressman Ed Royce (R-Calif.) with its 2015 Charles T. Manatt Democracy Award.

Professor Attahiru Jega: Nigeria’s Champion for Democracy
Nigeria’s former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega, has been an important force for democracy in Nigeria during his tenure as the country’s top election management official. Recently honored with IFES’ 2015 Charles T. Manatt Democracy Award, Professor Jega stepped down from his post on June 30 with a legacy of increased trust in elections and the INEC.

Civic education programs proliferated in the past few decades based on a strong belief that successful democratic consolidations require a strong and independent civil society that can mobilize and inform citizens who can then engage more effectively in politics, advocate on behalf of their own interests and hold their leaders accountable. Do these civic education programs really work? Are individuals exposed to these programs more likely to attain basic political knowledge, embrace democratic values, and engage more effectively in electoral and political processes?

Media Guidelines for Reporting on Accessible Elections
In January 2015, the General Election Network for Disability Access in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (AGENDA) publicly launched the first edition of Media Guidelines for Reporting on Accessible Elections at AGENDA’s Third Regional Dialogue in Jakarta, Indonesia. The publication compiles international best practices and input from journalists on how to include and accurately represent the voices of citizens with disabilities participating in political life.
