Regional Director on “The Elections We Want” in Africa
As part of its annual report, the Wilson Center Africa Program asked IFES Regional Director for Africa Rushdi Nackerdien to contribute an essay on recent African elections. His piece, “The Elections We Want,” covered 2017 elections in Angola, Rwanda, Liberia, Senegal, the Gambia, and Kenya, and their implications for election practitioners moving forward.

MoU with Mexico’s TEPJF Enhances Electoral Integrity Efforts
On December 12, IFES and the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judicial Branch (TEPJF) of Mexico signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at IFES headquarters. This signing further substantiates a longstanding relationship between IFES and the TEPJF and is a reflection of both organizations’ shared commitment to electoral justice and electoral integrity. The signing of the MoU comes at a time when elections face new challenges around the world, and Mexico in particular has demanding year ahead with elections for president, Senate and representatives, some governors and some local positions slated to happen concurrently for the first time in July of 2018.

IFES Organizes First Pacific Regional Disability Rights Dialogue
The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), in collaboration with the Fijian Elections Office, the Pacific Disability Forum, and the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat held the first ever Pacific Regional Disability Rights Dialogue from May 11-13. The conference, which took place alongside the Pacific Islands, Australia and New Zealand Electoral Administrators Network (PIANZEA) annual meeting in Nadi, Fiji, is the first region-wide gathering of election management officials and disability rights advocates from across the Pacific.

DRC Civic Education Impact Evaluation
Civic education programs proliferated in the past few decades based on a strong belief that successful democratic consolidations require a strong and independent civil society that can mobilize and inform citizens who can then engage more effectively in politics, advocate on behalf of their own interests and hold their leaders accountable. Do these civic education programs really work? Are individuals exposed to these programs more likely to attain basic political knowledge, embrace democratic values, and engage more effectively in electoral and political processes?
