IFES Announces International Recipient of 2013 Democracy Award
The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) will honor the head of Mexico’s Federal Electoral Institute (IFE) with its 2013 Charles T. Manatt Democracy Award. IFE President Leonardo Valdés Zurita will receive the award on September 24, 2013 at a gala dinner in Washington, DC. IFES’ annual Democracy Award recognizes men and women who demonstrate a commitment to advancing freedom and democratic values.

Two Years into the Arab Spring: Islam, Elections and Democratic Transformation
In the wake of the Arab Spring, the international community watched as popular Islamic political parties began to take shape. The history and diversity of Islamic political parties and the role Islam could play in the democratic transformation of the Arab World was often left out of the commentary. The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) and the International Council for Middle East Studies (ICMES) hosted a discussion on the rise and trajectory of Islamist political parties after the Arab Spring. Panelists discuss the influence of Islamists on the development of the constitution and legal framework, and the role of Islam in the political evolution of the MENA region.

Survey on the Effectiveness of the VOICE+ Voter Education Project in the DRC
IFES conducted a survey of voting-age adults in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) through face-to-face interviews in the fall of 2012. The survey was designed to evaluate civic and voter education activities implemented in Kinshasa, Bas Congo, Nord Kivu and Province Orientale, as part of the IFES Voter Opinion and Involvement through Civic Education Plus (VOICE+)Project.

CEDAW Anniversary: Making Women's Equality a Reality in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Although the constitution of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) makes provisions for parity between men and women with a view to fair and equitable participation in the management of the city (Mbuji-Mayi), this participation remains only theoretical, despite the country’s ratification of treaties on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women.
