IFES Elects Three New Members to its Board of Directors
IFES is pleased to announce the election of Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio), Foley & Lardner LLP Partner Cleta Mitchell and foreign policy expert Rodney Bent to its Board of Directors. “Senator Portman, Ms. Mitchell and Mr. Bent join the IFES Board at a time of great uncertainty in the democracy promotion space. Their diverse talents and expertise will strengthen our efforts to advocate for continued U.S. government funding for elections assistance abroad,” said IFES Chairman Ken Blackwell.

IFES Trainings Build Electoral Inclusion Capacity in Liberia

IFES Elects New Bipartisan Board Leadership, Recognizes Departing Board Members and Welcomes New Members
IFES today announced the election of the Hon. J. Kenneth Blackwell as chairman of its Board of Directors. Donald R. Sweitzer, the previous chairman of the Board, was elected as co-chairman. Amb. Blackwell, a Republican, and Sweitzer, a Democrat, will lead the IFES Board of Directors in an expression of the Board’s bipartisan nature. The Board also elected William J. Hybl, a Republican and former IFES chairman, and the Hon. Barbara B. Kennelly, a Democrat who has been an IFES Board member since 2003, as vice-chairs; June Langston DeHart as treasurer; and Thomas A. Devine as secretary.

IFES Trains NEC Gender Section in Liberia on Disability Rights
With the support of the United States Agency for International Development, IFES has worked closely with the National Elections Commission of Liberia (NEC) over the past several years to build its capacity to conduct credible and inclusive elections. As part of this work, IFES is providing the NEC Gender Section with technical support on the inclusion of marginalized groups, such as persons with disabilities and women.

Celebrating 26 Years of the American with Disabilities Act
On July 26, 1990, the United States passed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a landmark law increasing access to basic rights for persons with disabilities in the country. The ADA’s passage was the result of decades of advocacy by citizens with disabilities, following other successful legal reforms such as Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act, which established nondiscrimination of persons with disabilities in federally-funded programs as a right.
