Earlier this month, the International Criminal Court ( ICC) arrived in Kenya to begin investigating the election violence following the December 2008 election. The bloodshed left at least 1,100 dead and over 300,000 persons displaced.

Sudan’s First Vote After Peace Agreement
From April 11 to 15, 2010, Sudan’s citizens turned out to vote in the first nationwide election held since 1986. The election, a key milestone of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), marked the first time the vast majority of Sudanese had ever voted and served as an important opportunity for those in the south and Abyei to practice this civic duty in anticipation of the next CPA milestones: the January 2011 Referendum on Southern Sudan’s independence and Abyei Referendum. Nationally, Omar Hassan al-Bashir was re-elected as President of Sudan with 68% of the vote, and in the South, Salva Kiir Mayardit was re-elected as President of Southern Sudan with just shy of 93% of Southern Sudan’s vote.

A comparative report on post-election violence in Eastern Africa has been released by the Programme in Comparative Media Law and Policy at the University of Oxford, the Center for Global Communications Studies at the Annenberg School, University of Pennsylvania, and the Stanhope Centre for Communications Policy Research.

IFES SUDAN Election Administration Support Program
IFES has been awarded a multi-million dollar contract by USAID to support the electoral process in Sudan. The three-year program is aimed at helping the Sudanese electoral administration deliver technically sound and credible elections called for in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

In August 2008, IFES, through the support of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), fielded a team of experts to carry out a baseline study of civic and voter education in Sudan as a resource to the Canadian government and to the wider Electoral Donors Group (EDG) in Sudan.

Kenya Inquiry Commission Adopts IFES Recommendations
An Independent Review Committee led by retired South African judge Johann Kriegler reported last week that the 2007 elections in Kenya that unleashed a wave of violence were so badly flawed that it is impossible to know who won. IFES studied the 2007 election process and delivered its findings to the seven-member Kriegler commission. Many of the IFES recommendations were adopted in Kriegler’s final report.
