A Look Beyond the 2017 Kenyan Elections: Empowering Young People Through Mentorship
On May 6, 40 Kenyan youth leaders graduated from IFES' Youth Mentorship initiative as part of a youth civic and voter education project called Changamka, a Swahili word which loosely translates to “take action.” Having gone through three months of leadership workshops and connecting with peers and mentors, the graduates are confident to serve as change agents within their communities across the country.

How Kenya Used Social Media to Inform Voters and Counter Fake News
In Kenya, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is mandated to conduct continuous voter education and in 2017, ahead of the Kenyan general elections, the IEBC set out to work collaboratively with IFES through the Kenya Electoral Assistance Program to improve outreach and voter education efforts for meaningful electoral participation.

Addressing Violence Against Women in Politics
On Wednesday, May 16, IFES and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Tex.) co-hosted a briefing to discuss global legislation that specifically addresses violence against women in politics (VAWIP), personal experiences from women that have been impacted by VAWIP, existing legislation to address VAWIP and recommendations for future legislation. The U.S. Civil Society Working Group’s new policy brief on VAWIP – co-authored by IFES Senior Gender Specialist Dr. Gabrielle Bardall and Alliance for Peacebuilding Research Associate Emily Myers – was launched at this event.

IFES Statement on the Passing of Bunny White and Fred Furth
The Board of Directors and staff of IFES mourn the passing of Gladys “Bunny” B. White, wife of the late IFES founder Clifton “Clif” White, on May 5, 2018, at the age of 102, and of IFES Board Member Frederick “Fred” P. Furth on May 12, 2018, at the age of 84.

Conflict Mediation and Mitigation Activities Promote Peaceful Participation During 2017 Elections in Kenya
IFES has worked with local partner Act Change Transform (Act!) under the U.S. Agency for International Development-funded Kenya Electoral Assistance Program (KEAP) to implement a series of large-scale locally-contextualized conflict mitigation activities. Through the use of conflict management panels, Act! has leveraged grassroots networks to ensure multi-stakeholder engagement in electoral peace efforts.

Promoting Voting Rights for Persons with Disabilities in Sri Lanka
In February 2018, Sri Lanka held a local government election to elect over 8,000 representatives under a new mixed-member proportional representation system. IFES worked with the Election Commission of Sri Lanka and civil society partners to conduct targeted voter education initiatives for voters with disabilities ahead of the elections.

Chairman of the IFES Board Ken Blackwell submitted a written testimony to the House Committee on Appropriations’ Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs for inclusion in the record on “Electoral Assistance: A Cost-Effective Investment in a More Stable, Prosperous World.” Blackwell urged the subcommittee and the U.S. Congress to continue its tradition of bipartisan support for democracy, rights and governance.

She Leads: Empowering Female Candidates Ahead of Local Elections in Sri Lanka
Ahead of Sri Lanka's February 2018 local government election, IFES carried out a women’s leadership program, She Leads SL, that equipped 458 Sinhalese, Tamil and Muslim women with practical campaign skills including fundraising, networking and coalition building, campaign messaging, social media use, public speaking, and development of personal campaign action plans. As a result of the She Leads SL training, nearly 43 percent of alumnae participated as candidates in the 2018 local government elections, utilizing skills gained from the training to elevate their campaigns.
