IFES worked closely with the National Elections Commission in the lead up to the vote. Election Day was a peaceful and celebratory affair, with Liberians across the country braving the sweltering heat and lengthy queues.

Robust Multimedia Campaign Supports Liberia's Pivotal 2017 Elections
Conducting elections in Liberia is a challenging endeavor. Along with a lack of basic transportation and communications infrastructure, over half the population (53%) is illiterate. As such, civic and voter awareness campaigns cannot be conducted through many traditional mediums like print media. In partnership with the National Elections Commission and 27 grassroots civil society organizations (CSOs) in all 15 counties of the country, the IFES Liberia team developed a creative and compelling voter education and awareness campaign.

On October 2, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) held its Eighth Annual Charles T. Manatt Democracy Awards and 2017 Joe C. Baxter Award ceremony in Washington D.C. This year’s Democracy Awards honorees were His Excellency Luis Almagro, secretary general of the Organization of American States, former IFES Board of Directors Vice Chair Judy Black (R), and Congressman David Price (D-N.C.). The Baxter Award recipient was Tamar Zhvania, chairwoman of the Central Election Commission of Georgia.

Elections in Liberia: 2017 General Elections
On October 10, Liberians will vote for president and vice president, as well as all 73 seats in the House of Representatives. Twenty candidates will vie for the presidency and 980 will compete for the House seats. The October 2017 general elections represent the first peaceful political transfer between democratically elected governments since 1944, including a potential change in the ruling party. In not seeking a third term, which would have first required a constitutional amendment, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf is ensuring that the return of democracy to Liberia is not temporary.

New Guide for Including Women with Disabilities in Liberia’s Elections
In July, IFES and the National Elections Commission of Liberia (NEC) Gender Section produced a new guide to support the integration of women with disabilities at the NEC and in its programming. “How to Include Women with Disabilities: A Guide for the Electoral Process in Liberia” includes good practice examples from the NEC Gender Section’s work to empower women and persons with disabilities to participate fully.
