IFES Celebrates 30th Anniversary with 2017 Charles T. Manatt Democracy and Joe C. Baxter Awards
On October 2, IFES held its Eighth Annual Charles T. Manatt Democracy and 2017 Joe C. Baxter Awards at the Four Seasons Hotel in Washington, D.C. This year’s awardees included His Excellency Luis Almagro, secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), former IFES Board Vice Chair Judy Black (R), Congressman David Price (D-N.C.), and Joe C. Baxter awardee Tamar Zhvania, chairwoman of the Central Election Commission of Georgia.

IFES Announces U.S. Recipients of 2017 Democracy Award
IFES will honor former IFES Board of Directors Vice Chair Judy Black (R) and Congressman David Price (D-N.C.) with its 2017 Charles T. Manatt Democracy Award. They will be joined by the international recipient of the 2017 Charles T. Manatt Democracy Award, His Excellency Luis Almagro, secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS), and Tamar Zhvania, chairwoman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Georgia and the 2017 Joe C. Baxter Award honoree.

Mandela Day Book Drive Benefiting Turner Elementary
On Wednesday, August 23, members of the IFES Africa team delivered books collected for its Mandela Day Book Drive to Turner Elementary School in neighboring Congress Heights. The book drive’s target was to collect 441 books for the school (one for each student in grades K-5), but ultimately far exceeded its goal by collecting over 600 books. In honor of anti-apartheid advocate and former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela's 67 years of public service, the United Nations-designated holiday encourages people to give with the goal of bringing enduring, positive change in our local communities through collective action.

IFES Elects Three New Members to its Board of Directors
IFES is pleased to announce the election of Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio), Foley & Lardner LLP Partner Cleta Mitchell and foreign policy expert Rodney Bent to its Board of Directors. “Senator Portman, Ms. Mitchell and Mr. Bent join the IFES Board at a time of great uncertainty in the democracy promotion space. IFES President Presents New Book to Georgian Ambassador in D.C.
On March 16, 2017, International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) President & CEO Bill Sweeney presented a copy of the book First Universal Democratic Elections in Independent Georgia to Georgian Ambassador David Bakradze during a reception at the Georgian Embassy in Washington, D.C. welcoming him to his new posting.
