Palestinian Local Elections 2011
On Tuesday, 8 February 2011, the Palestinian Authority issued a renewed call for local elections to be held on 9 July 2011. The call follows last June’s Cabinet decision to cancel elections and the subsequent High Court ruling in December that the cancellation was, indeed, illegal.

Palestinian High Court: “Cancelling Elections is Illegal”
On December 13, 2010, the Palestinian High Court issued its final verdict on the lawsuits challenging the Council of Ministers (Cabinet) of the Palestinian Authority decision to cancel the local elections scheduled for July 17, 2010. The Court ruled that once the cabinet calls for elections, it does not have authority to cancel them.

This topic brief presents the main findings from the SWMENA survey in Lebanon on people’s attitudes towards policy change. The survey elicited opinions on possible law reforms that have the potential of improving the status of women in Lebanon. These include opinions on an optional civil marriage law, on introducing gender quotas in elected bodies, and on reforming the citizenship law.

This topic brief presents the main findings from the SWMENA survey in Lebanon on civic and political participation. It includes an analysis of civic engagement through membership in different types of organizations and taking part in different activities to express opinions on political and social issues. Voting behavior is also explored in reference to participation in the most recent parliamentary elections in June 2009 as well as women’s opinions about policy priorities and factors influencing their voting choices.

Focus on Lebanon | Social Attitudes Toward Women Topic Brief
The SWMENA survey investigated the extent to which women in Lebanon felt they enjoyed freedom of movement without pressures from family or society. The survey also examined general attitudes towards violence against women and whether domestic violence, in particular, is tolerated or rejected by society. These topics were covered in an attempt to understand power relations within the family and within society in how it views women.
