Haitian and Mexican Election Management Bodies Hold Peer-to-Peer Exchange
From June 28-July 1, 2018, a delegation from the Haitian Provisional Electoral Council visited Mexico City to take part in the Foreign Visitors’ Information Forum – 2017-2018 Electoral Process organized by the National Electoral Institute and the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judiciary, accompanied by IFES.

Haitian Journalists Trained on Election Coverage
Twenty-one Haitian journalists from all ten national departments were trained from June 18-19, 2018, on tools and methods of investigative journalism for approaching and reporting election-related matters with professionalism and transparency.

Violence Against Women in Elections and the Representation of Women in Haitian Politics
The reasons for women's weak representation in Haitian politics are deeply rooted in social norms and the widespread incidence of violence against women in elections (VAWE), which the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) defines as "any harm or threat of harm committed against women with the intent and/or impact of interfering with their free and equal participation in the electoral process during the electoral period." Oftentimes, VAWE is subtle and more indirect than physical attacks against voters and candidates, but it nonetheless impacts women's interest and willingness to get involved in political processes and structures of governance. The threats and social stigmas they face are associated not only with the act of voting, but with many other activities that are a common part of a free and fair democratic experience. To document the nature and impact of VAWE in Haiti, IFES has produced Violence Against Women in Elections in Haiti: An IFES Assessment.

Mobile Radio Station Reaches Half a Million Tunisian Voters
With support from the U.S.-Middle East Partnership Initiative, in 2017 IFES built a mobile radio station ahead of Tunisia’s municipal elections on May 6, 2018, and drove it up and down the length of Tunisia, broadcasting radio programs on elections in remote and hard-to-access areas.

Haythem Srihi: From H4D Participant to Municipal Councilor
IFES launched an original initiative called Hack4Democracy (H4D), a combination of democracy camps and hackathons which uses technology to engage Tunisian youth in civic activism. At just 24 years old, Haythem Srihi is a member of the H4D finale’s winning team and a newly elected municipal councilor from the city of Jammel. Haythem’s success in both the H4D competition and in the May 6 municipal elections serves as a prime example of what Tunisian youth can achieve when they are given the tools to prosper and have the drive to overcome societal barriers.
