Elections in Jordan: 2016 Parliamentary Elections
In 2016, Jordan changed its Elections Law to put in place a new electoral system for parliamentary elections, implementing an open-list proportional system for each of the multimember electoral districts and eliminating the single district at the national level.

IFES Trains Libyan Diplomats on Electoral Processes
From August 24-26, 2016, IFES hosted the first ever governance workshop for members of Libya’s Washington D.C.-based diplomatic corps. The USAID-funded training provided the 17 members of the corps with tools and resources to bolster awareness among participants about the standards that are used globally to assess democratic governance and electoral processes.

Libyan Electoral Sign Language Lexicon Facilitates Deaf Empowerment
For Deaf Libyans, language barriers are a profound challenge to full participation in political life. In Libyan elections – as in many elections worldwide – speeches, voting materials and other essential electoral information are not translated into sign language. This creates an alarming gap in access to information for Libyan Deaf communities, and opens a subsequent possibility for manipulation by others.

Women’s Reserved Seats in Bangladesh: A Systemic Analysis of Meaningful Representation
There are currently four separate and different reserved seat systems for women at three levels of government in Bangladesh, and they produce different gender equality outcomes. This paper, authored by IFES Bangladesh Chief of Party Silja Paasilinna, examines these systems in detail, provides an overview of gender-based challenges women elected representatives face in both general and reserved seats, and provides a summary of suggested improvements to the current systems as well as options for alternative systems.

Bangladeshi Peace Activists Meet with US Officials on IFES’ PAVE Program
On March 30, 2016, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) hosted a meeting in Dhaka, Bangladesh with several U.S. Government officials including Dr. Sarah Sewall, the Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights at the U.S. Department of State. In the meeting, Dr. Sewall discussed the present political situation in Bangladesh with eight Bangladeshi “Peace Ambassadors” (Shanti Dut Gon in Bangla) and two members of the Women’s Active Voice in Elections (WAVE) Advisory Group.

Controlling Campaign Finance in Tunisia
On March 24, 2016, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), in collaboration with the Tunisian Court of Accounts and the Parliamentary Commission Responsible for Electoral Legislation, organized a workshop on the provisions of the draft amendments to the electoral code pertaining to campaign finance and its control.
