July 18 is Nelson Mandela International Day, commemorating the lifetime of service anti-apartheid advocate and former President of South Africa Mandela gave to South Africa and the world. Mandela’s legacy as an outspoken and indefiatable advocate for democracy, freedom and equality has been an inspiration to the democracy and governance community and IFES’ work to give a voice to every vote.

New Electoral Governance and Reforms Project in Guatemala
Over the past two years, Guatemalans have made unprecedented advances in strengthening their country’s democracy and engaging in political life.To support implementation of the Law on Political Parties, IFES will work hand-in-glove with Guatemala's Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE). This legislation puts in place landmark reforms that seek to increase accountability, enhance the transparency and inclusivity of the electoral system, and expand the TSE’s mandate as a political finance regulator.

IFES is pleased to announce the election of Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio), Foley & Lardner LLP Partner Cleta Mitchell and foreign policy expert Rodney Bent to its Board of Directors. “Senator Portman, Ms. Mitchell and Mr. Bent join the IFES Board at a time of great uncertainty in the democracy promotion space. IFES Elects New Bipartisan Board Leadership, Recognizes Departing Board Members and Welcomes New Members
IFES today announced the election of the Hon. J. Kenneth Blackwell as chairman of its Board of Directors. Donald R. Sweitzer, the previous chairman of the Board, was elected as co-chairman. Amb. Blackwell, a Republican, and Sweitzer, a Democrat, will lead the IFES Board of Directors in an expression of the Board’s bipartisan nature. The Board also elected William J. Hybl, a Republican and former IFES chairman, and the Hon. Barbara B. Kennelly, a Democrat who has been an IFES Board member since 2003, as vice-chairs; June Langston DeHart as treasurer; and Thomas A. Devine as secretary.

Working with Women Leaders and their Allies for Equality
On International Women’s Day, and every day, we honor and support the tireless efforts of women's rights advocates. One of the ways these women leaders affect change is by working with and building partnerships with male allies. With support from the U.S. Agency for International Development, IFES has developed the Male Allies for Leadership Equality (MALE) training module, an addendum to IFES’ women’s leadership training curriculum.
