IFES Statement on the Passing of Libya Political Inclusion Activist Ahmed Alhrari Dakam
On November 1, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) lost a member of its extended family. Ahmed Alhrari Dakam, a passionate political inclusion activist and a major advocate for the rights of persons with disabilities in Libya, passed away due to injuries sustained in a traffic accident.

IFES Kosovo Works to Engage Youth in Political and Electoral Processes
To increase youth participation in, and awareness of, political and electoral issues in Kosovo, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) implemented an intensive program, which included mock debates, election simulations, and meetings with political entities. The information from these reports will be used by Kosovo’s Central Election Commission and civil society organizations to develop their public outreach strategies and to identify which groups of voters will need more effective targeting and motivation.

IFES Kosovo Promotes Inclusive Elections
The “Manual for Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in Electoral and Political Processes” provides information on ways of including persons with disabilities in the electoral process and political sector in Kosovo. The “Leaflet for Disability Access Criteria” provides examples of the legally required specifications to ensure equal access for persons with disabilities.

IFES Trains Libyan Diplomats on Electoral Processes
From August 24-26, 2016, IFES hosted the first ever governance workshop for members of Libya’s Washington D.C.-based diplomatic corps. The USAID-funded training provided the 17 members of the corps with tools and resources to bolster awareness among participants about the standards that are used globally to assess democratic governance and electoral processes.

IFES Assists Youth “Superchangers” in Kosovo Amplify their Voices
Recent studies have identified the alienation of Kosovo youth from electoral, political and governance processes as a potential threat to the peaceful development of a unified society, and the basis for extremism and potential radicalization of youth by clerics and political interest groups. In light of these findings, IFES implemented a year-long program focused on youth engagement throughout Kosovo to help mitigate some of these issues.

In Libyan elections – as in many elections worldwide – speeches, voting materials and other essential electoral information are not translated into sign language. This creates an alarming gap in access to information for Libyan Deaf communities, and opens a subsequent possibility for manipulation by others.

IFES Trains Indonesian Regional Election Administrators on Disability Rights
IFES, the lead partner in the General Network for Disability Access (AGENDA), piloted a disability rights and elections module of the Building Resources in Democracy, Governance, and Elections curriculum in Bogor, Indonesia from April 6-7, 2016. Participants discussed disability inclusion throughout the election cycle with regional Commissioners.
