Shaping the Next Generation of D.C. Leaders and Voters
As a global leader in democracy promotion, IFES recognizes the importance of cultivating the next generation of leaders and voters. In the spirit of cultivating this leadership more locally, IFES staff returned to Turner Elementary School, a public school located in the Congress Heights neighborhood of Washington, D.C., on November 17 and December 8, 2017, to meet with fifth-grade students. They were part of a series of seminars on elections, in advance of the school’s first student-run election for class offices, which took place on Thursday, December 14.

Mandela Day Book Drive Benefiting Turner Elementary
On Wednesday, August 23, members of the IFES Africa team delivered books collected for its Mandela Day Book Drive to Turner Elementary School in neighboring Congress Heights. The book drive’s target was to collect 441 books for the school (one for each student in grades K-5), but ultimately far exceeded its goal by collecting over 600 books. In honor of anti-apartheid advocate and former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela's 67 years of public service, the United Nations-designated holiday encourages people to give with the goal of bringing enduring, positive change in our local communities through collective action.

Promoting Participation By Electing Youth: The London Youth Advisory Council
The London Youth Advisory Council (LYAC) of Ontario, Canada is comprised of young people who are elected to their positions by the general public. Each councilor represents a ward, or region, of the city of London, Ontario. For this episode of Dialogues on Democracy, IFES Youth Advisor Augusta Featherston spoke with Ward 4 Councilor Nicole Worozbyt and Adam Fearnall, Council Director of London Youth Advistory Council (LYAC) about the impact their council has had on their community and how some of these lessons can be expanded to new programs.

Global Youth Service Day 2005
Youth Service America (YSA) is a resource center that partners with thousand of organizations commited to increasing the quality and quantity of volunteer opportunities for young people in America, ages 5-25, to serve locally, nationally, and globally. The piece includes YSA’s mission statement and goals for youth public service and community stewardship. Some examples of proposed community projects are HIV/AIDs awearness campaigns and neighborhood beautification initiatives.

“Global Youth Service Day Planning Tool Kit” is a 2004 publication promoting the fourth annual Global Youth Service Day. The booklet includes chapters on how to fund raise and recruit for Global Youth Service Day activities as well as how to increase your image and impact by incorporating public relations into your day. Also, the packets contain evaluation forms for their Global Youth Service Day day.

Unofficial Student Ballot
“Unofficial Student Ballot” is a student sample ballot for the Commonwealth of Virginia, created by the Electoral Board of the City of Alexandria, where the student voter must decide on a candidate to become member of the United States Senate and another candidate to be member of the House of Representatives. This ballot from November 5th 2002 also asks the voter to vote yes or no on proposed constitutional amendments and proposed bond issues.

“Election Day Participation for High School Students” is a political flyer produced by the Fairfax County Electoral Board in 2002 which encourages high school students to participate in the election as workers such as “Election Page” or “Officer of Election” is Virginia, USA. The flyer does not explicitly mention the type of election referred to but it is believed to be the 2002 Mid-term election for US Senators and Congressmen.
