IFES’ 2013 Charles T. Manatt Democracy Awards
IFES marked its’ annual Charles T. Manatt Democracy Awards with a gala dinner ceremony at the Grand Hyatt Washington in Washington, D.C., on September 24. This award underscores IFES’ belief that advancing good governance and democratic rights begins with empowerment of and active participation from citizens.
Each year, three honorees who are united by this belief gather with IFES friends and colleagues to celebrate democracy. This annual event brings together a diverse group of leaders, including ambassadors, government officials and business executives.

Past Recipients of IFES’ Charles T. Manatt Democracy Award
Charles T. Manatt Democracy Awards recognize the exceptional work of individuals who demonstrate a commitment to freedom and democracy. IFES presents the award annually to three individuals who exhibit the dedication to democracy and human rights embodied by the award's namesake, former IFES Board of Directors Chairman Charles T. Manatt.

IFES Announces International Recipient of 2013 Democracy Award
The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) will honor the head of Mexico’s Federal Electoral Institute (IFE) with its 2013 Charles T. Manatt Democracy Award. IFE President Leonardo Valdés Zurita will receive the award on September 24, 2013 at a gala dinner in Washington, DC. IFES’ annual Democracy Award recognizes men and women who demonstrate a commitment to advancing freedom and democratic values.

A Snapshot of the 2013 Midterm Elections in the Philippines
The Philippines held midterm elections on May 13, 2013. These polls marked the second time a nationwide automated election system was used. Preparing for the May 13, 2013 Elections in the Philippines
The Philippines is holding midterm elections on May 13, 2013. The polls are significant as they will be the second time the Philippines uses a nationwide automated election system and the midterm elections are largely considered to provide insight into the upcoming 2016 general elections. After years of planning, including a continuous voter registration process and a general registration in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, the Philippine Election Commission (COMELEC) will serve approximately 52 million registered voters on Election Day. Ahead of May 13 Polls, Testing Election Technology in the Philippines
The Philippine Election Commission (COMELEC) recently finished final testing and sealing of the precinct count optical scanners (PCOS) – a week before local and national elections on May 13. This exercise was conducted by almost 78,000 sets of polling officials nationwide.Testing and sealing is an important step before PCOS machines can be determined ready for use on Election Day. IFES staff visited a polling center at the University of the Philippines Integrated School in Quezon City to watch the testing and sealing proceedings. The voting center supervisor directed all officials to conduct their testing in the school’s social hall. The photo gallery captures the testing exercise.
