Women’s Reserved Seats in Bangladesh: A Systemic Analysis of Meaningful Representation
There are currently four separate and different reserved seat systems for women at three levels of government in Bangladesh, and they produce different gender equality outcomes. This paper, authored by IFES Bangladesh Chief of Party Silja Paasilinna, examines these systems in detail, provides an overview of gender-based challenges women elected representatives face in both general and reserved seats, and provides a summary of suggested improvements to the current systems as well as options for alternative systems.

Dignity for Indian Girls
Female feticide, infanticide and neglect of girls has been widely practiced in India with alarming implications on the rate of missing girls. By 2005, India’s ratio of girls to boys had declined so steeply that there were fewer than 900 Indian girls born for every 1,000 boys – one of the lowest rates worldwide.

Angelina Jolie Meets with Participants of the IFES-Supported She Leads Program in Myanmar
Angelina Jolie met with the Yangon participants of the She Leads training program on her recent trip to Myanmar as United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Goodwill Ambassador. She Leads is a training program implemented by Yaung Chi Thit, with the support of IFES, that seeks to address the lack of women’s leadership at all levels of state and society and provide women with the skills and confidence to become leaders within their communities.

Gender equality and women’s empowerment remain a significant challenge in the Maldives. A new report from International Foundation for Electoral Systems’ (IFES), titled “Qualitative Assessment: Perceptions about Women’s Participation in Public Life in the Maldives,” examines the root causes of negative perceptions toward women in decision-making roles in the Maldives, including broader societal attitudes toward gender equality and women’s empowerment.

In the Maldives, as in all countries around the world, women’s interest and ability to participate in the political process is impacted by a combination of legal, political, social, economic and cultural factors. An understanding of how each of these factors independently affects participation, as well as the aggregate effect of these combined factors, is critical to developing targeted strategies to increase women’s engagement in the political process.

Women’s Election and Leadership Training Program
The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) has implemented the Women’s Election and Leadership Program in several countries to develop the capacity of women to participate in the election process as election officials and to develop leadership skills among women. These programs provide a blend of technical knowledge and soft skills to enable trainees to effectively use the knowledge and skills gained in electoral roles.
