Women’s Leadership Training in the Maldives
From February 10-12, 2015, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) conducted a Women’s Leadership Training in the Maldives for 28 female representatives from each of the country’s four main political parties; gender focal points at various government offices; and female managers from government bodies as well as the private sector. The training – informed by a needs assessment conducted in the weeks prior to the event – provided participants with a rare opportunity for women to come together across political party lines; learn about domestic violence laws in the Maldives; and build a strong women’s network.

IFES Supports Efforts to Promote Women’s Engagement in Elections in Myanmar
In Myanmar, there is a significant gap between men and women’s engagement in elections, politics and governance. There is much work to be done to ensure gender equality in the electoral process. The Union Election Commission of Myanmar (UEC), with support from the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) is working on a number of initiatives to better incorporate women into the process.

Money and Elections in the Maldives
IFES conducted the first systematic nationwide survey of its kind in the Maldives. The survey was conducted to measure the prevalence of vote buying in the Maldives during the March 2014 parliamentary elections. The final report, Money and Election in Maldives: Perceptions and Reality, will be shared with the Government, the Parliament, the Election Commission, civil society, political parties and others.

Nurturing Democracy in the Maldives
In June, The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) held a “Democracy Camp” for 40 youths, aged 14-16, from around the country.The primary goal of the camp is to enhance the participants’ knowledge on civic education, rights and responsibilities of a citizen, democracy, human rights and other pressing social issues. Myanmar’s Election Commission Takes Steps to Achieve Gender Equality and Include Voters with Disabilities
After five decades of military rule, Myanmar has initiated an ongoing process of democratic reform, opening new and significant political space. However, persons with disabilities in Myanmar still face numerous obstacles in accessing their right to vote, and, at only 6.8 percent, Myanmar has one of the lowest percentages of women in parliament in the region.

2014 Thailand General Elections
On February 2, 2014, the world watched Thailand’s general election unfold within a tenuous political environment. One-tenth of polling stations throughout Thailand were closed on Election Day, and 28 of 375 constituencies had no candidates due to anti-election demonstrations.
Thailand is now in a position where it cannot currently produce enough legislators to seat the House of Representatives. Legal challenge by the opposition over the validity of the election is a possibility, as well as holding by-elections to fill the remaining seats.
The task of the Election Commission of Thailand under these circumstances is a formidable challenge. Never has the independence, neutrality and competence of commission been more important.
